Long Gun Registry to be Dismantled House of Commons Passes Bill C-391

Ottawa – Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson is pleased with the first step taken to dismantle the failed long-gun registry.  “By passing Bill C-391, a majority of Members of Parliament, expressed the political will of the House of Commons to commence dismantling this costly and ineffective program.  This has been a long time coming and there’s still a way to go but finally, the Standing Committee on Justice has the draft legislation to abolish the long gun registry on the agenda.”

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation maintains the long-gun registry has been a wasteful fiasco from inception through execution.  The registry has not saved a single life while costing 500 times the amount originally estimated making it the most excessive program overrun in the history of Canada.  Hunters, farmers and sport shooters view it as a costly tax-grab and ‘red tape’ burden.

“For years, my constituents have constantly and consistently contacted me opposed to the hardship that Bill C-68 caused in Crowfoot and many other federal ridings in remote and rural parts of Canada.  Fourteen years and $2 billion later, the gun registry has not helped address gun crime in urban nor rural Canada.  Today, a majority of Members of Parliament said, ‘enough’!  These taxpayer dollars could be spent on policing budgets, border control, education, treatment for violent offences and help for victims, and more,” Sorenson concludes.
